Dr. McFarland was raised in Bourbon County where he graduated in 1979. He went to Eastern Kentucky University and majored in chemistry. He then applied to medical and dental schools at University of Louisville and Kentucky. He chose dental school at UK where he graduated with a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree in 1987.
In his last year at UK, he invented and patented a protective sleeve needle to reduce the chance of accidental needle sticks for patient, staff, and clean up crews. The needle is in several of the most prestigious dental schools in the nation and in private practices in the US, foreign countries and now being tested in the US Military for use. We use the needle here for the protection of our patients and staff.
After graduating, Dr. McFarland opened a private practice in Paris.
He married Pam Plummer, also from Paris, in 1992. She is a dental hygienist and currently works in Winchester. They have one son, Houston, who was born in January 1998 and a daughter, Hagan, born in February 2003.

Credentials
Dr. McFarland has been named trainer for Cerec
(same day crowns) by the Patterson Dental Company
for the state of Kentucky.
Patterson Dental Company has also asked Dr.
McFarland to lecture on this technology in Kentucky
and throughout the U.S.
Dr. McFarland received his fellowship from the International Congress of
Oral Implantology.
Dr. McFarland has recently received his fellowship in sedation dentistry through the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation.
Dr. McFarland is a leader in computerized
cosmetic dentistry and lectures to other doctors
around the US for dental companies about CEREC.

Biolase user.
With the Biolase laser you can do the following
procedures without use of needles or numbing:

Dr. McFarland is certified in smilelase, a laser that can brighten you smile in
a single visit in 24 minutes.
Dr. McFarland is a certified Invisalign Provider
(braces without brackets or wires).
Dr. McFarland is one of the very few doctors who place implants and restore the tooth
with a crown in the same day.
Dr. McFarland invented a patient safe mate (self sheething) which is used around the country in dental schools.
Dr. McFarland has been published several times in National Dental Magazine about procedures he has done.
